NURICORN

                                     A man of many thoughts

On a day when the media, the news and all the social networking sites, especially twitter is buzzing with Turkish international Nuri Sahin supposed loan move to the Emirates stadium to have reached its completion. The very same Turkish international was least bothered about what was being said about him and was happy and busy sweating it out with his present team mates at Valdebebas during the last practice session before tomorrow’ Super Cup El Clasico. Why am I pointing towards this minutes detail is to let you know this actually happens. By this, I mean a player training with his squad while he knows soon he would be on a flight to his new home for at least one full year.

Nuri Sahin was seriously a unicorn for the Los Blancos, people knew he was there (you were allowed to see him on the official team page of realmadrid.com) but no one knew when will he been seen on the green turf of Santiago Bernabeu. Thought to be the heir to Xabi Alonso and for me still is, Sahin had a pretty dry spell especially coming from Borussia Dortmund where he won consecutive Bundesliga trophy and was also named the player of 2010-11 season. As a Blanco I expect nothing but best for Sahin whenever he moves to Arsenal.

Yes, I do agree Arsenal is the best place for Sahin to go and grow. I am sure when touched by the magic of Arsene Wenger; Sahin will become the player that Los Merengues would give anything to bring him back to Bernabeu.

What can the Gooners expect from Nuri Sahin? First thing they can expect is loyalty towards Arsenal, Sahin made exactly 11 appearances for Real Madrid last season with respect to which I would say it would have been better that he played for Real Madrid Castilla side. But during that dry spell you won’t find a single article in the news circuit where Sahin has shown is discontent or frustration towards Real Madrid and I am sure if it was some other player he would have already written a book against Madrid by now.

Please dear Gooners don’t expect him to be the new Alex Song, basically because he is not Song. Sahin might not have that physical presence that Arsenal are so habitual of when it comes to Song but his technical ability is at a different level when compared with the Cameroonian international. His eye for perfect through balls and when needed, a perfect goal poacher makes him a perfect fit for Arsenal. Sahin possesses the skill of taking accurate set-pieces which you would never expect from Song.

So Sahin is actually that footballer next door, who is every manager’ dream. One thing for sure, if given time at Emirates, Sahin will give a totally different dimension to the Gunners game. Imagine if with youngsters like Goetze, Kagawa, Kuba and Lewandowski he can turn the destiny of Dortmund around, think what he would do with seasoned footballers like Podolski, Arteta, Cazorla, Walcott and Giroud.

A man with no trustworthy son

Teacher and the student

‘In Arsène We Trust’ cards are now part of the celebration at the Emirates Stadium, my question is, is there anyone Arsène can trust on? Just anyone? Because in the past couple of season all the guys that Wenger has bestowed his trust on, have sooner or later left the club. Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fábregas and now Robin van Persie to name few are the players who were made captain of Arsenal football club and these are also the players who left the club in the next season.

I am not saying every player should be a Paolo Maldini or a Raúl Gonzalez or a Ryan Giggs, in today’ world it would be foolish for me to think that way. But a captain is a player who holds the team together, a captain is the player who is given responsibility by a manager to take care of the team while he can only pace up and down on the sideline, a captain is the most trustworthy warrior in a football team, a captain who is part of every decision that is being taken at the club, in all a captain is the symbol that represents the club, sadly for Wenger his captains always leave.

When I first started watching football, I used to think Arsenal is known as Arsenal because they have a lanky, tall, side partitioned hairstyle and an ever thinking French manager who is known to the world as Arsène Wenger. Right now when I think about it, I feel I wasn’t 100% wrong after all it has been Wenger’ hard work and his resilience that has made what Arsenal is today.

The Guardian journalist Amy Lawrence wrote in one of her recent articles, “the obvious candidates to be Arsenal’s next captain are Sebastian Squillaci, Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-young,” and she wasn’t wrong in saying this after all why would Wenger or as a matter of fact Arsenal want to lose another of their influential players. Fine they would go through the season with a lesser charismatic character to lead the team, fine for a season Arsenal would be known as Chamakh’ Arsenal, fine the captain’ armband would be around the arms of a player whose arms are not strong enough to cater for the teams needs but at least, like every season Arsène Wenger won’t be left like a lonely mid-60 man who has no clue what wrong did he say or did to his son who had no choice but to leave.

It is high time for Arsenal to stop treating themself as what my brother calls it ‘a feeder club’ for the world, be it for Barcelona, Juventus and most recently for Manchester United. As a closet Arsenal fan and a spellbound first row seated fan of Arsène Wenger’ weekend magic show all I can wish for is for Arsenal to finally get a Maldini, a Giggs, a Raúl of their own. So that Wenger doesn’t have to speak, “It’s never great to lose players of that quality but he only had a year contract so we do not have a choice,” again.

TOON ATTACK – I

Wile ‘Gunner’ Coyote

For those who don’t know Wile was one of the smartest and fastest Looney toons and this character totally suits one Gunner. Yes you guessed it right it has to be Theo Walcott. Walcott is fast and he is extremely smart player but you know there was another side of Wile and that was he never knew how to use his smartness in the right way. And yes I see that side in Walcott also he has a habit of overdoing his smartness and then looking like a lost child. Wile used to bring in all the ACME gadgets fix it up, and all this to catch up with the Road Runner but was never successful. One of the important reasons for this was Wile never used to think about the final step. Same is the case with Walcott he runs and runs and does tricks and stepovers but when he gets into the box 7/10 cases he has no idea how to give his run a face of a goal or an assist. But as in the case of Wile, Arsenal’s Walcott is an amazing talent and imagine a player who could change the conversion rate from 3/10 to 7/10.

White Nemo

With Oscar fever still around us, me a football freak dreamt of Ozil getting the Oscar for best actor for the movie ‘Finding Ozil’ directed by Jose ‘the Special one’ Mourinho. Yes for me Ozil does look like ‘Nemo’ especially with those crazy eyes seeing passes which most of the defenders don’t think are possible. Yes he does glide across defenders with super fast flipping of his fins. Yes most of the time he can’t last on the land for more than 75 minute for obvious reasons he needs water to get some air into his lungs. Yes he is funny too when he beats 4 defenders and the goalkeeper just to roll the ball on to the post which Benzema ‘the cat’ pounces upon. On a serious note there cannot be a better director than Mourinho because he saw the elegant footballer in the punk looking Bremen’s Ozil. Only difference between Nemo and Ozil being Nemo eats fish food where as Ozil feeds on assists and goals and in angry mode he only feeds on Villa’s blood.

Magical Jerry

Jerry from the Tom and Jerry show is surely one of the most loved and most favourite cartoon characters around the world. And I see all the attributes of Jerry in our very own magical player Lionel Messi. Jerry is fast, Messi is also fast and that also with a ball in his feet. Jerry knew how to utilize the situation when in trouble (obviously due to Tom) be it using the frying pan to leave Tom bamboozled or using the door to bang it on Tom’s face. Same is the case with Messi he will never fall (God knows where is his centre of gravity), he will use one defender to fake the other defender, if you are lucky enough you might just see him use his gliding powers to get through the defenders without they even knowing and finally he does get into those little holes left in the defense.

Bugs ‘coelho’ Bunny

In this case I am going to first tell you the characteristics of Bugs in such a way that I will leave you with no option but to identify the players. Bugs was surely one of the smartest and ambitious character that Warner Bros. ever created. He would use his smartness and cunningness to achieve whatever he has aimed for, be it by hook or by crook. There have been scenes when Bugs has faked his death to finally get the gold (read Goal) out of his enemies. Along with all this Bugs had an aura of elegance and self-best attitude and never cared what others had to say about him because for him he was the best in all possible ways. Bugs also loved fame and being the centre of attraction in a crowd of other famous people so yes Bugs was also very flashy. I would want to end this section with two words Cristiano Ronaldo.

Red Granny

Obviously this fictional character has to be a player whose talent on the field makes you feel ‘Old is actually gold’ and if you haven’t guessed it till now I am talking about Ryan Giggs. This guy has actually been tearing defense apart since 1991 and all this in his very same red jersey. Like the Granny who used to use her wittiness to keep saving Tweety on a regular basis Giggs has been playing like a street smart footballer and beating defenders with the very same ease as he used to during his debut year 1991. When you look at Giggs you actually feel some players turn into a legend for what they did for a club but as for him he is already a legend because he keeps on and on doing whats best for the club. As Granny sometimes used to be one hell of a naughty character our Giggsy is also very well known for his naughtiness. Granny was a character who whatever be the situation used to take pretty good care of Tweety same way Giggs has been influential enough that many young players over the years look up to him for inspiration and that feeling of being protected.
